Victorian Leaf & Trellis Scarf
The Leaf & Trellis lace insertion pattern is from a Victorian needlework book. After much effort to convert into modern notation, and a lot of yarn scraps used knitting up swatches to get the pattern working correctly, I think it is now ready to use. Victorian patterns are notorious for having mistakes in them, and also for being very ambiguous. However, I thought it would make a very pretty lacy scarf, as opposed to a curtain which the book suggested! I think the finished scarf is well worth all the effort, it is light enough for summer, but pretty enough for formal occasions all year round. On the side edges and ends I have worked British Moss Stitch, I felt the normal knit through the back garter stitch didn’t look right and also it didn’t have the body to control the lace pattern, which does weave from side to side as the stitch count changes. I have only made the scarf 50 inches long as I wanted a light weight scarf for Summer evenings, but you can do as many pattern repeats as you like to achieve the length you want. Please read the pattern carefully before beginning, it can save a lot of trouble later on.
